Gunmen yesterday reportedly attacked the convoy of the lawmaker representing Isiala Ngwa North and South in the House of Representatives, Ginger Onwusibe.

Onwusibe’s police orderly was killed in the attack.

The incident, according to reports, happened about 9pm in Ubakala Umuahia South local government area.

According to a security source, gunmen dressed in black and wearing police jackets blocked Onwusibe’s convoy, but only the driver and two policemen were in the vehicle.

The gunmen were said to have started shooting at the escorts after they identified themselves as police officers. One died and the other sustained injuries.

The attackers reportedly fled the scene as personnel of the Ubakala Police Division mobilised to the scene.

Police spokesperson Maureen Chinaka was yet to respond to message sent to her WhatsApp as at last night.

Also, gunmen yesterday attacked Ukpo and Abatete communities in Dunukofia and Idemili North Local Government Areas of Anambra State, killing five persons, over the Monday sit-at-home.

Oil magnate, Prince Arthur Eze, hails from Ukpo.

The two incidents happened between 8.30-9am yesterday.

The hoodlums also burnt some vehicles, while shooting non-stop and shouting ‘no Biafra, no peace in Igbo land’, according to eyewitnesses.

Their target was the local vigilance groups since policemen desert the roads on Mondays for fear of being attacked.

One of the Presidents-General of a community was said to be critically wounded and was rushed to the hospital

“They shot at him many times but the bullet didn’t penetrate his body, and they resorted to cutting him with cutlass.

“He just went to Eke Abatete to pick an iron bender to work in his house when those hoodlums struck, killing two vigilante members that followed him and the iron bender

“We are praying for his recovery. This senseless violence has left our community shaken,” a community leader said.

Some leaders in the two communities said what happened during the Biafra war looks better than what they’re experiencing in the Southeast today

Police spokesperson Ikenga Tochukwu could not be reached for comments, but a senior police officer said the Commissioner of Police, Obono Itam, has deployed troops in the two communities.

“Investigation is already ongoing, the perpetrators will not go unpunished. The command will never allow these hoodlums to take over Anambra space, nay Southeast, Never

“Unfortunately, when we apprehend such men, people will start making calls describing them as innocent while we become the bad elements.”
