The Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI), in collaboration with GIZ Nigeria and ECOWAS, has trained drivers on behavioural defensive driving.

The training focused on defensive driving, security risk assessment and first aid.

General Manager of LASDRI Mrs. Afusat Tiamiyu stressed that the initiative reflects the shared vision of the state government in promoting professionalism, safety and efficiency.

“We are committed to building a safer and more responsible driving culture in Lagos State,” she said.

Mrs. Tiamiyu noted that the drivers’ participation shows their commitment to excellence.

“Some of you came from Benin, Abeokuta, Shagamu, and other parts of the country. Your participation in this program signifies your commitment to excellence, not only in your personal development, but also in contributing to the broader goals of sustainable transportation and road safety in our communities,” she noted.

The general manager also lauded organisers of the training for the initiative, urging drivers to participate actively in the training.

She added: “Driving is not just moving vehicles on the road; it is about professionalism. Those who have passed through this kind of training won’t be the same while driving.

“The knowledge you gain here will not only benefit you as individuals, but will also have a positive impact on the lives of countless others who rely on your expertise and dedication.”

Security Risk Management Adviser for GIZ Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ernest Aliozo, explained that the training was organised for GIZ drivers from the southern part of Nigeria.

“This particular slot is for drivers from the southern part of Nigeria, which includes Lagos, Abeokuta and Benin. These are where we have offices.

“The drivers are constantly trained, at least once every three years, to ensure they are up to standard, especially knowing how risky it is to be on the road. So they are constantly retrained on how to discharge their duties.

“Another two-week training will be held in Abuja for drivers in Jos, Abuja and the Northern parts of Nigeria.”

Aliozo emphasised that the training covers every sector, including professionalism, defensive driving, behavioural operations, confidentiality in discharging their duties.

Team lead (Occupational, Health and Safet) at Alphafort, Tuoyo Aruegingho, said the training is meant to change the mindset of drivers so they can see themselves as professionals.

“This training goes beyond just driving skills; it’s about risk assessment, first aid, and responsible behavior.

“We need people who have hands-on, on-the-job experience, people who can do it in real-time. That’s why AlphaFort is working with GIZ to train these professional drivers on dealing with real-time situations and contribute positively to solving these problems while they carry out their official duties,” he added.
