Owa Obokun of Ijesa dies at 87

The Owa Obokun of Ijesa land, Oba Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran, has passed away. He was 87.

The monarch reigned for 42 years.

According to sources, Oba Aromolaran died on Wednesday evening. He was admitted to the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, for an undisclosed ailment.

There was anxiety in Ilesa after security operatives, including operatives of the Department of State Service (DSS) and the Nigerian Police, took over the palace. It was gathered the the deceased’s relatives had been moving his personal belongings out of the palace.

Asiwaju of Ijesaland, Chief Olayinka Fasuyi, who confirmed the death, described it as the end of an era.

He said in a statement: “An era comes to an abrupt end! A monumental history closes. The torch bearer of Oduduwa relocates. The symbol of Obokun Adimula transits. Ijesaland celebrates the life of her idol, our Imperial Majesty. We eulogise the reign of our Owa Obokun Adimula, and applaud the legacy of our paramount ruler.

“The 42 years of monumental reign come to a glorious end. Ijesa women and men, young and old, at home and in diaspora in unison say adieu to our Baba, Oba (Dr) Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran II, CFR, LL.D; the Owa Obokun Adimula and Paramount Ruler of Ijesaland.”
