Gates: I still believe in Nigeria’s future

Co-Chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Bill Gates, has expressed optimism in the greatness of Nigeria’s future.

Gates, in his remarks to the National Economic Summit (NEC), urged leaders to invest in the people as a measure to ensure the country’s economic prosperity.

He also highlighted areas where the government can invest in the people – health, nutrition and maternal health, as well as agriculture, and reiterated the foundation’s continued commitment to investing in Nigeria’s prosperity.

He said: “…of course, all the solutions I’ve mentioned take investment—of time and money. No government can do this alone. That’s why partnership is so important. I’ve already discussed how the private sector can support health and nutrition. And I hope you know you also have a partner in the Gates Foundation.

“For over two decades, our grantees have helped solve some of the most intractable problems in all the areas I’ve discussed. Our commitments to Nigeria and to Africa have only grown over the years. And I look forward to many more years of partnership.

“I’m an optimist by nature. I’ve seen how much good can be done by smart investments, innovative thinking, and dedicated leaders who put their people first. But I’m also a realist. And I know as well as you do that turning things around won’t be easy. But by putting the Nigerian people first, Nigeria’s leaders can build a better future.

“In 2018, I closed my remarks to the NEC by telling you I believed in the grand vision of Nigeria’s future. Well, I’m here today to say I still do. And that future depends on all of you.”
