About 50 traditional rulers were installed in Lagos State in the last one year, even as the governor approved the reconstitution of 84 members into the State Council of Obas and Chiefs which has helped to promote a sense of belonging, equity and unity in the state.

Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development Kayode Robert stated this while reeling out the ministry’s achievements in the last one year.

According to him, the peace enjoyed in the traditional institution ‘attests to the people’s support and belief in the leadership quality of Governor Sanwo-Olu’.

Robert also reassured residents that the grassroots would continue to be at the government’s development policy so they can also enjoy the dividends of democracy. He said Governor Sanwo-Olu intends to actualise the dream of Making Lagos a 21st Century Economy and delivering the reality of a greater Lagos.

According to him, the government has committed huge resources to paying insurance benefits to families of deceased local government and SUBEB staffs, adding that N391 million was disbursed to 164 families in the last one year.

Robert affirmed that his ministry remains undaunted, focused and unrelenting in its drive towards bringing the dividends of democracy to the doorsteps of residents and fully actualising the T.H.E.M.E.S. Plus agenda of this administration.

The commissioner also said in the last one year, the ministry has continued to engage critical stakeholders and has had direct interface with local government areas in its efforts to cascade development to the grassroots. “This has yielded developments at the grassroots, and has culminated in the ongoing rural-urban renewal projects which have helped in reducing rural-urban migration’.

He added: “One of these is the two-day capacity building workshop the ministry organised for 376 councilors across the local government councils, being part of the government’s role in improving the law-making capacity of councillors in the 57 councils.”

Robert also hinted that the ministry has continued to monitor and inspect projects and markets across the 57 councils to ensure proper hygiene, cleanliness, waste management and structural safety of facilities. This, he said, has led to safety and cleanliness in the markets.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural Development, Dr. Nurudeen Agbaje, said his office is also committed to strategic and critical infrastructural development in the rural communities, among are ongoing road constructions, including a 400-metre road in Ijake Community, Oto-Awori; a 510-metre road at Ganiyu-Oduntan, Ikorodu with four others in Iganke Community, Agbowa LCDA; Ayubu-Bashorun Road in Ijede; Erelu-Amikanle Road in Alimosho and Onishon Street in Ibeju-Lekki.
