LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT REFUNDS 145 FORMER SUBSCRIBERS OF EGAN HOUSING ESTATE
Lagos State will generate about 100 million gallons of water daily when the laying of pipes for its major water works is completed, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has said.
He stated this during an official visit to the State Water Corporation Adiyan 1 and 2 waterworks.
According to Wahab, the consultants on Adiyan 2 and management of Water Corporation said the present administration is committed to ensuring that pipeborne water gets to all parts of the state.
The commissioner stated that part of measures to make the move realisable is the ongoing laying of an 8.1km water pipe network to serve some communities. He also explained that the Adiyan Water Works 1 is built to supply 70 million per day, Adiyan Water Works 2 will supply 11 million per day, Iju water works to supply five million per day and the Ishashi Water Works to supply five million, with an estimated total of about 100 million gallons of water per day to service Lagos State.
He added: “The water project is a major project that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is determined to solve. and to solve it, we came to assess the level of ongoing work at the Adiyan 1 and Adiyan II water works. This project is the biggest, and is expected to pump 70 million gallons per day.”
Wahab also said the project will be completed by the last quarter of year 2027.
He added that 8.1 kilometres of about 1600mm Diameter Ductile Iron (DI) pipes for raw water pumping mains are being laid along the stretch of the expansive Adiyan premises.
“1,600MM thick pipe has been laid to run for 8.1km. It is an ongoing project which the ministry officials have come to inspect, and we are impressed with it. It is heartwarming to know that 100 million gallons of water would be supplied from IJU, Adiyan I & 2, Isasi micro and mini water works soon.
“This translates that majority of homes in Lagos will have pipe borne, this being the target of the present administration. Hence, this tour is necessary to see how far the work has gone since the contractor was mobilized. Governor Sanwo-Olu would also visit the site in person soonest.
“This sector remains a focus of the government’s investment and development efforts and, as such, the present administration is committed to achieving a water safe city that guarantees access to clean water for all residents,” Wahab said.
The Project Manager, representing Salini Nigeria Limited, Cifola Daniele, said the scope of the project is the construction of 320,000³/day water treatment plant that will be of the World Health Organisation (WHO) standard.
According to him, the water treatment plant project is expected to run for 36 months, and will end scarcity of pipe-borne water across Lagos State.
Managing Director of Lagos Water Corporation Muktar Tijani restated the government’s interest in the coporation’s affairs. He reiterated that all the concerns raised by the consultant have been adequately addressed by the commissioner.
Also on the tour were Special Adviser on Environment, Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu; Permanent Secretaries – Dr. Gaji Omobolaji and Engr. Mahamood Adegbite; GM LASWAMO, Engr. Femi Afolabi, among others.
