Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reiterated his administration’s intent to make Lagos the hub for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital technologies in Nigeria and West Africa.

This, he said, is to make Lagos a model of excellence and leader in technological advancements across Sub-Saharan Africa.

The governor spoke at the grand finale of the Job Initiative Lagos (JIL) Training Program organised by the Ministry of Tertiary Education.

The event, themed ‘Maximizing the Transforming Capabilities of Artificial Intelligence in the 21st Century Workplace’, focused on recognising the potentials of artificial intelligence and digital technologies in economic transformation.

Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, said the mission is to partner relevant stakeholders to provide hands-on training in AI, machine learning and data science, a digital entrepreneurship program for students and mentorship for easy access to job markets in competitive environment.

He added that the goal is to continue to create a vibrant ecosystem that fosters innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship.

“As a government, we recognise the potential of artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship and digital technologies in economic transformation, improved governance and avenue. Therefore, creating opportunities for our youths to enhance the quality of life of the citizenry is a task that must be done.

“It is a significant milestone in our quest to build a vibrant inclusive and prosperous society, by harnessing the power of innovation, entrepreneurship and skills development,” he said.

Commissioner for Tertiary Education Tolani Sule thanked the governor for investing in infrastructure and quality tertiary education.

According to him, over 500 students from various institutions, who took part in the training, have been equipped with industry-recognised skills, entrepreneurial mindset, and innovative thinking.

“The entrepreneurial aspect of the training has effectively bridged the gap between academia and industry. And testimonies from participants have been encouraging and inspiring. This shows it is a worthy investment by the government.

“I assure our students of plans to scale up the initiative to reach more students in state-owned tertiary institutions and expand industry partnerships for job placement and mentorship,” he added.
