Lagos Reps member Oshun empowers 1,000 women, youths

The lawmaker representing Lagos Mainland Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Olanrewaju Oshun, has empowered 1,000 women and youths of the constituency with N50,000 each.

This, he said, is to show his commitment to supporting women with small-scale businesses, with strong emphasis on inclusivity and empowerment.

He added: “It’s a way to help our people because things are tough now and whether we like it or not, everyone needs help one way or the other. What we’re doing today is empowering women and youths, we have artisans, petty traders, widows, to help put them back in business.

“We are also encouraging our youths in our little way to better themselves. It is for the beneficiaries to use the grant judiciously. This is not money for beer or hotels, it’s to pour back into their business, feed themselves, pay rent and children’s school fees.”

Oshun also hailed the government for its efforts in trying to make things work, and advised the people to work with the government to bring peace and progress to the country.

He added that more interventions are underway that will be tailored to meet specific needs of market women and youths in Lagos Mainland.

“In another six weeks, we’re putting something in a pipeline; we want to train another 500 people in different trades so they will be empowered to start something since we all can’t work the 9-5 jobs,” he added.

One of the beneficiaries, a student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Olalekan Zainab, said: “I’m grateful to Hon. Oshun for this gesture. The N50,000 grant will go a long way because the economy is really hard right now. I’m very grateful.”

Another beneficiary, Adeleke Adeshola, said: “I’m very grateful and happy about it. I run a clothing business and so I will add it to my capital to boost business and use the remainder to support my family.”
