- Mojisola Lasbat-Meranda elected new speaker
Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly Mudashiru Obasa has been impeached.
Obasa was impeached during an emergency plenary. He was accused of fund misappropriation and lack of transparency in the Assembly management.
The motion was moved by Femi Saheed under a Matter of Urgent Public Importance.
Obasa was accused of gross misconduct and poor leadership, including perpetual lateness to legislative sessions and meetings; high handedness and lack of regard for members; gross abuse of office and privileges; intimidation and oppression of lawmakers by inciting members against one another.
Saheed also said Obasa practices an authoritarian and undemocratic leadership style in discharging his duties. He therefore moved the motion for his impeachment.
Following the adoption of the motion, the impeachment was made by the 32 members through a voice vote.
Subsequently, Hon. Mojisola Lasbat-Meranda was voted the speaker and Hon. Fatai Mojeed the deputy speaker.
The House also suspended the Clerk of the Assembly, Olalekan Onafeko. He was replaced with Abubakar Taiwo Ottun as Acting Clerk of the House.
Obasa’s impeachment comes few days after reports surfaced that he ordered the withdrawal of N43 billion for the purchase of back-up vehicles for the lawmakers.
It was also gathered that Obasa was in Atlanta, US, when he was impeached.
