The Surveyors Council of Nigeria (SURCON) in Lagos State has urged professionals in the field to embrace ethical practices in discharging their duties.
Chairman of the SURCON State Committee on Ethics and Practices (SSCE) Ayokunnu Adesina spoke at the second interactive and orientation for resident and non-resident applicant surveyors in the state.
According to him, the interactive session was designed to engage, onboard and update prospective Private Practicing Surveyors on the requirements for surveying practice as the government is committed to having a comprehensive digital mapping.
Adesina, who is also the Permanent Secretary/State Surveyor-General, restated that surveying is a noble profession whose bedrock is ethical practice and owning up to mistakes.
“We must embrace nobility in all aspects of our work, as the quality of our services demands the highest standards. We cannot afford to compromise our integrity or the reputation of our profession,” he said.
The chairman felicitated with prospective resident and non-resident private practicing surveyors on their recent qualification as Surveyors.
This professional height, he said, is a testament to their dedication, commitment, and rigorous training.
“I wish you continued success and accomplishments in good health throughout your professional career,” he added.
Adesina also enjoined the over eight hundred registered Surveyors in the state to shun unethical conduct, saying their behaviour and decision-making are fundamental to bringing about positive collective change in the society and fostering a rebirth.
Chairman, Body of Fellows, Nigerian Institute of Surveyor (NIS), Lagos Branch, Prince Afolabi Solesi, commended Adesina for the seamless induction of new members. He admonished them to imbibe discipline in actualising their goals in the profession.
Surveyor Olumide Adewebi, while addressing the inductees, highlighted few key areas to focus on as a surveyor
He said: “Your focus should be on ethical practice, legal compliance, client communication, global positioning system, safeguarding information, collaboration etc.”
Adewebi noted that Lagos State, having the highest number of intakes, has a lot of areas for surveyors to practice. He appealed to the inductees to be careful about the steps they take in starting the profession.
“The first step in practice is your most crucial step, so be careful of your first step because whatever you start with is what you will end with.
“You don’t need to know every form of practice to be the best, you don’t need all the equipment, rather you just need to know what you need, when you need it and how you can get it,” he advised.
